· Door bells are simple low voltages devices that operate on 10 to 24 volts. The most common problem is the transformer or the chime has gone bad. The most economical repair is replacing both the transformer and the chime. These devices need to be matched so they operate at the same voltage.

Here is a typical doorbell wiring for one or two buttons. Use 2 conductor thermostat wire18 or 20 gauge for the 24 volt side. The transformer should be mounted on an electrical box with the 120 volt connection made inside the box.
